Photo: We’re saddened to tell you it’s time to say “see you later” to Patrick, the beloved Western lowland gorilla who has lived with us for 18 years. The personable silverback soon will be moving to Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia, S.C.

Our staff will really miss the 23-year-old Patrick, and we know you will, too. We’ve tried for years to create social relationships for him. While he loves people, he’s been indifferent to other gorillas. The move will give Patrick an expansive new home where he’ll continue to be loved and appreciated. And it will let us introduce our two newest male gorillas, Shana and Zola, to current residents B’wenzi and Juba, forming our largest bachelor troop ever. (This is important to the Gorilla Species Survival Plan, a national cooperative management program in which we participate to ensure the continuation of these remarkable animals.)

On Saturday and Sunday, we’re making Zoo admission just $5 so you can wish him well at a “We’ll Miss Ya, Patrick!” celebration. Special activities each day include:
- Mini-cupcakes at 12:45 p.m. at the Gorilla Trail
- Special treat presentations for Patrick at 1 p.m.
- A going-away card to sign for Patrick and our staff
- A 2:30 p.m. gorilla keeper presentation

Patrick’s a hugely popular guy. We’d love to have you share your favorite memories and photos of him here on Facebook and on our Instagram page @dallaszoo. You can email them to info@dallaszoo.com, too. (And if you see our gorilla keepers, give them an extra smile, will you?)
